Tattered Angels

Let's be honest. This year has been tough – tough on bank accounts, tough on employment, and overall, tough on our emotional and spiritual wellbeing. The result? The people who have saved a lifetime have lost their hard earned money as Wall Street numbers continue to plummet. People who have dedicated their lives to an employer who been dismissed without compensation or financial security. People who have been able to afford luxury and can not afford necessities. And, more importantly, people who have dedicated his life to help others find it difficult to survive themselves, let alone provide and help those less fortunate.
Unfortunately, when they reach the difficult times and people are down and out, morale suffers and the hope is lost. Spirituality goes out the window and remorse is a thing of the past. The consequences of this downward spiral often are drastic – an increase in crime, increases stress and decreases happiness. What a way to enter the season Holiday!
Because I too have felt the effects of a shrinking economy, I have sought to understand the positives among the negatives in society. I kept thinking, "We're not ready for the season of giving – I have nothing to give." So, how can we accept this next season to give hope and hopeless? How to refrain from self-pity and sadness that overwhelms us daily or paycheck to paycheck?
Maybe, just maybe, we all need an epiphany. For some reason, however, epiphanies occur when least expected. I found another today. As I walked along the cobblestone street took my parish, I found a little inspiration and a glimmer of hope, literally. Looking behind the trees, barely visible, covered with weeds weed, Celestino was a statue of an angel. Between a path of religious statues, this baby is hiding, waiting, and waiting for someone to recognize the beauty she possessed.
I found it ironic view. Catholic Statues are typically in clear view, well maintained and visible to the naked eye. However, this religious statue was hiding, ripped, and sporting a broken wing, like many of us trying to survive in today's world.
Religious statues, either in pieces or brilliantly, can bring back the hope of the season when most have lost all hope. Just like the Broken Angel, the season of giving, renewal, and birth can bring back something that is lost – and no money, no job security, but rather a sense of peace, serenity, and community unity.
When all is lost – whether the stock market or the labor market – look at the sculpture garden watching from behind a bush or vision for the inspiration so many need to find this time of year. In faith, we find hope. And with the birth of our Savior, it is the renewal. The renewal can bring change to society and change to our souls. When you feel lost, take a closer look and see the beauty that is hidden. Embrace the lost and find hope in this holiday season.
